Let's
see if our Exploders remeber about Jennyfer Star...
yes, she's once more our guest. She's already been one
of our first rock girls (February 2004) and she played
in a band called Swindle A Go Go. After less than one
year we have met her again and we discovered she has
left her former band to create another one called Starlet
Suicide with some members of various Swedish bands.
After having listened to their first demo, "Broken
Doll", I've contacted Jennyfer to realize this
interview that throws light on her new project, on her
ambitions and future plans, without forgetting questions
in our style outrageous. One of the other band members
was Karl Thunder who has recently left to devote himself
exclusively to the Paradice and has been replaced by
Sammy Sparks. Stop the preface, let's start with the
interview. Check it out!
Hi Jennyfer, I think that 2004
has been a topic year for you. I think it should not
have been simple to take the decision to leave your
previous band. So why did you decide to quit Swindle
A Go Go?
Jennyfer Star: It´s
never easy to leave a band. It´s like a divorce
from friends who you have gotten really close to. But
I felt like it was time for me to do what I really wanted
to do. To write my own songs and lyrics.
Hey guys, introduce yourselves
to our readers, and tell us how, when and where did
you meet and decide to form the Starlet Suicide. I know
that some members of Starlet Suicide are also playing
in other Swedish sleaze bands as Paradice for example.
Rikki Riot: I met Jennyfer
at a party at her place and we talked some about what
music we were into. After a couple of months she gave
me a call and said she had quit her band and wanted
to form a new one. She asked if I were interested and
of course I said yes.
Theodor Paine: Jennyfer
came to one of the Paradice shows and asked me if I
wanted to join her new band. It sounded interesting
and we were going to have a summer break with Paradice
so we started to hang out and it seemed to work out
pretty well so here we are.
Should I consider Starlet Suicide as a Jennyfer Star's
solo project or as a band in which every member has
the right to take decisions about the songwriting? Do
you want to tell us in which way every song included
in "Broken Doll" demo took its form?
Jennyfer Star: So far I
have written all of the songs. But we arrange all songs
together. Starlet Suicide is definetely not a solo project.
Everyone´s opinions are important.
Rikki Riot: We´ve
all really liked the stuff Jennyfer has come up with
so it´s all working well. Of course we all give
our opinions about the song and how were gonna proceed
the arrangment of it.
Jennyfer Star: About the
songs, "It´s A Disease" was something
I wrote after I had a nervous, angry fucking breakdown.
I were just spitting out the lyrics and it turned out
really fine. "You Make My Heart Go" took its
form a little bit slower but under the magic of true
love. "Steal My Pride" was written to several
persons and it´s about having a crush on someone
who totally crushes you in return after a few rounds.
Finally "Waste Me Away" is another type of
lovesong. I first came up with the lyrics for the chorus
years ago but then I changed some parts of it and it
seemed to fit into my life at the moment.
Jennyfer, sincerely I think that
the Starlet Suicide's sound isn't so different in comparison
with the sound of your previous band. Do you think that
in the next future your sound will show more personality
or do you think that your today sound will not change
remaining as your trademark in the next future?
Jennyfer Star: I think
that it´s a huge different between Swindle-A-Go-Go
and Starlet Suicide. I think that my personality (together
with the other members of course) shapes the songs in
a whole different way. But of course we will probably
develope the sound to another level in time.
I noticed that you have sort of
two musical personalities. You have a glamour attitude
mixed with grunge decadence. I'm referring both to the
title of your demo and to the monicker of your band.
"Broken" gives me a sense of pain and violence,
meanwhile "Doll" gives me a sweet New York
Dolls remembrance (or a wet sex night flavour!) Do you
agree with me? Are really your compositions inspired
by a soul's struggle between these two elements? Why
did you decide to adopt Starlet Suicide as the name
of your new creature?
Jennyfer Star: Well, it´s
pretty obvious that our sound is a mix between glam
and grunge but it also has a touch of punk. To me, "Broken
Doll" resembles to be all dolled up but still broken
on the inside. About the band name, we wanted to have
something with Starlet and Suicide sounded good together
with it. There´s also a deeper meaning behind
the name.
Rikki Riot: New York Dolls
and wet sex is what it's all about.
In "Broken Doll" demo
is there any song that you particularly like or feel
closer too? And if so, why?
Theodor Paine: My favourite
song is not on the demo yet but it´s called "God
Bless This Mess". "You Make My Heart Go"
was the first song I heard and it got stuck in my head
like a real hit single.
Rikki Riot: On the demo
I like "It's A Disease" the most. "Songwise"
I think it's the best one
Jennyfer Star: I feel close
to all of the songs, since they are so personal. But
I think "Steal My Pride" is the song that
has grown onto me the most.
Tell me about your first gig
and about which are the songs that you usually play
on stage. How was the audience's reaction during your
firstshows?
Rikki Riot: I've only heard
good things so far.
Jennyfer Star: Yeah. People
seem to dig us a lot for being a new band and all. That´s
really cool! Our first gig went really well actually.
We played seven songs. All the four from the new demo
and then two other ones, plus a cover of Joan Jett´s
"I Hate Myself For Loving You".
Ok, do you have some anticipations
for our readers? What shall we expect from the Starlet
Suicide's future?
Rikki Riot: We're gonna
record some new songs in the near future and other than
that just play, play and play.
Jennyfer Star: Yes, that´s
about it. Well we have bigger plans than that but that´s
what we´re focusing on right now. Playing a lot
live and recording some new songs.
Jennyfer you're young but you've
already played in a lot of bands, and your career is
long enough to give me the chance to do the following
question. Except Starlet Suicide, in which band did
you have the funniest times and the best artistic satisfactions?
Viceversa, in which band did you live the worst times?
If you could turn back time, would you regret for some
decision that you've taken in the past?
Jennyfer Star: I don´t
have any regrets. The way I have chosen has lead me
to where I am today and I´m so pleased with Starlet
Suicide! So I just have to thank all the other bands
I have been in. I had a lot of fun in Miss Cocaine and
the worst thing must have been splitting up that band.
The best artistic satisfactions must be Starlet Suicide.
I also had a lot of fun in Swindle-A-Go-Go.
Jennyfer, we've been one of the first italian webzines
that decided to dedicate an entire site section to female
artists. You are the editor of Cherryfuck so I'm sure
that you perfectly know the today's female rock scene.
Which are the female fronted bands that you really like
and you will be honoured to share the stage with? Besides
you have the chance to introduce us the latest Cherryfuck
compilation.
Jennyfer Star: I´d
love to play with Betty Blowtorch if they still would
be a band. Otherwise I´d say Fabulous Disaster.
Cherryfuck is planning a new compilation cd but we have
no bands ready yet. For updates, check www.cherryfuck.rocks.it.
Guys, try to immagine yourselves
as an Italian rock band placed into the music scene
of my Country. Describe me the trips of your immagination.
Please, don't try to use some acid pills!
Rikki Riot: I don't know
that much about the Italian scene, so I can't really
answer that. But I've heard some good stuff and some
bad stuff too, but it's probably just the same shit
over there.
Ok, in my opinion, dreams and
mental trips are running on the same way. So let me
know which are your recurrent erotic dreams, and your
most recurrent nightmares.
Rikki Riot: Aren't those
two combined?
Jennyfer Star: Hehe...
I know that Cortney Love, during
the early years of her career, used to play without
underwear, exactly without slips. Jennyfer do you think
to do the same before or after? I think that skin sells,
and a good or sexy look mixed to good music is surely
the best way to reach fame and money. Do you agree with
me?
Jennyfer Star: I have nothing
left to say except that I´d prefer to sell my
music because it´s good, and not because I show
lot of skin.
Ok guys, the interview is over,
thanks for your answers and rawk on! Have you some more
words for our Exploders?
Rikki Riot: Kiss kiss bang
bang!
Jennyfer Star: Yey! Visit
our website and download our rockin' tunes: www.starletsuicide.com.
