Powder are
ready to conquer the world with their super power called
Turbo Pop. Look at the followinbg words!!!
Hi guys! Lets start from
girls. So Ninette, if I understood well three years
ago uve been invited from Kenny Edmonds to record
a live track for the movie Josie & the Pussycat
! Can u tell us something about that experience and
also summarize what that movie was about?
Ninette: Yes. I can do
that, first of all, working with baby face was a serious
mind f**ck for me because i used to dance to his music
in a dance troop i was in when i lived in Canada. So
when i received a call from his "people" i
was like... cool... ok... then Phil and i were in his
studio waiting room, and he walks in and he is like...
"i love your voice... and thats why i called you
in"... i was like..."nice"... The movie
is about 3 girls who put a band together and make it
big only to realize that the record company puts subliminal
messages in the music to make the people buy the record.
So at the end they win the crowd over with a song that
has no subliminal messages. It's a happy happy ending!!!
Ninette, as I can see from some
pics ure very sexy! What do u do to keep yourself
so fit? Somewhere I read that u teach Kick Boxing
if
hats true I hope to be always your friend
Ninette: (laugh), cute!!!
Ido teach kick and i also teach step, body sculpt, jump
rope andwhat ever else i can think of... I an currently
putting together a workout video of sorts in the new
year... Just in time for our tour in Europe and Japan!!!
Phil, before forming Powder u
recorded with Alice Cooper Brutal Planet,
u took part of Methods of Mayhem together with Tommy
Lee and u cooperated also with Rob Zombie and Andrew
W.K.! What do u have to say about those experiences
and about these legends as artis and under their human
profile?
Phil X: Alice Cooper got
my phone number from Rob Zombie and i got a call from
the producer of "Brutal Planet", Bob Marlett.
I initially went into the studio to record overdubs
on 3 songs but it turned into 9 over 2 days. I didn't
get to meet Alice who i've been a fan of since i can
remember but when i do meet him, i can say "hey...i'm
the guy who did all the crazy guitar parts on "Brutal
Planet". Tommy Lee is great to work with because
he just loves music. i saw the motley crue tours where
he was soloing in spinning cages and on ceiling tracks
in arenas and i always thought that it would be amazing
to work with him so obviously it was like christmas
morning when he said he wanted me to play on the methods
record. Rob is awesome. I think his records sound brilliant
so it's great to be a part of those projects. Andrew
is a super-talented guy with fantastic ideas. I recorded
most of my guitars on that project in Los Angeles and
then they flew me to Aspen, Colorado for a day to do
more over-dubs.
Phil did u follow Methods of
Mayhem on tour? Did u play at Gods of Metal some years
ago in Italy?
Phil X: I didn't want to
tour with the Methods of Mayhem because i had found
it dissatisfying and creatively frustrating being a
side guy and playing other peoples music in the past.
I know that Powder will play in front of Italian fans
in the near future and because Ninette and I wright
the songs and put all of our heart and soul into what
we do... That will be the best vehicle for Italy to
see me at my best and I can't wait to see their faces.
How did u meet Allen and J-Bo
and why did u decide to form Powder? Is there any particular
meaning behind the monicker u adopted?
Ninette: we met the guys
through friends... And started to peice it together
that way... I have always wanted to just get out there
and do what i do... But in the past we had been working
with people who wanted to down play my personality and
crazy antics... So when we finally got rid of those
people i was like..."f**k it... It's time now for
mama to do what she came here to do!!!". It truley
is in fun and pure pleasure to entertain... There's
no deep hidden meaning in what we do... it's about keeping
our fans wondering what's next... And to suck the new
fans into our world and leave them wanting more! I am
always designing new costumes and creating new choreography
for my dancers and jumpers... And adding in new ideas
all the time!!!
Which artist of the past influenced
u the most? Phil I suppose u like Black Sabbath
Is
there any new band on underground scene that u follow
with particular interest and would like to make our
readers know?
Ninette: Tina Turner, Robert
Plant and of course the incredible David Lee Roth!!!
Those are some of my influences!!! and current stuff
that i listen to? Rammstein, Fat Boy Slim!! (laugh).
Phil X: Totally Black Sabbath
and Judas Priest. A new band would be Hot Hot Heat from
Canada
Allan Hearn: Getty Lee,
Billy Sheehan, John Deacon. New bands? Queen of the
Stone Age and Audio Slave
Sonic Machine has
soon become The Rock Explosion top album! Would u explain
to the ones who have not yet listened to it which are
the main features of your music u call Turbo Pop?
Phil X: Catchy Pop songs
with an aggressive delivery. A sexy and intense voice
flowing overtop of fat guitars, percussive loops and
a hell of a pulse.
What would u like to say about
the video Up Here? When the bright blaze
written Powder is projected on L.A. sky, I soon remembered
Batman! Who realized the concept and the direction?
Do u have some pleasant thing to remember happened during
the making of the video?
Ninette: That concept was
created by the very talented Stuart Acher, who directed
the video, he really wanted the whole superhero thing!!!
And he did it! For me the yummiest thing i remember
aside from being up on a wire for a good hour or so,
was that the crew was so amazing, everyone was very
cool, they all worked extremely hard to make us look
great!! so if any of you cats are reading this... Thanks
again! You rock!!!
Do u personally know Paul Stanley
(Kiss giutar palyer)? I just read that he considers
u as one of the best bands hes ever listened to
for many years! Would u describe to Italian fans what
exactly happens in your live performances? Can we say
that they have something to do with the shock rock of
Alice Cooper and Kiss shows, but with new technologies?
Ninette: Yes we do know
Paul personally. He has come to our shows and is a big
fan. We email and chat on the phone now and again!!!
There was some talk going around town that we were going
to open for Kiss but at the time we were not signed
and did not have things as in order as we do now...
So for sure down the road our paths will meet once again!!
ya know it's funny that you say shock rock... Because
i really dont think that there is anything shocking
about the show... Seems pretty normal to me!!! You really
have to see it to fully grasp the essence of what Powder
is all about!
Ninette, u use to change your
clothes on stage very often, but I wonder if there is
one in particular that u prefer. Is there one that u
really love to wear, why?
Ninette: I do have alot
of costume changes during a show... I am constantly
making new things all the time... So it's hard to pick...
But if i had to i would pick my dish glove design...
I do have a special place in my brain for that one for
sure!!!
I read that u played at the famous
House of Blues! Which are the shows that
left u the most pleasant memories and why?
Ninette: The House of BLues
is a great place to play... The stage crew and staff
there are awesome people... They treat you really well
and they love to watch the show.. Which i get a kick
out of!!!
Allan Hearn: I'd have to
say the L.A. Music awards were we played for (and met)
Paula Abul, Billy Sheehan, Gary Busy, and Carmine Appice.
Or the first House of Blues show opening for Nina Hagen
when we thought there would be 8 people there to see
us and there were 800... Rightous!!
Is there any song from Sonic
Machine u feel most linked to and why? Is there
one u love to play live more than the others? If I could
see one of your show I would like to listen Go,
I really love that song!
Ninette: "Go"
is one of my favs too!! i really am sorta connected
to all the songs on the record in one way or another...
I do like performing Need a Little Help... I really
get to play with the fans in that one... And be outragous
too!
What is your songwriting process?
How do u conceive a song, its lyrics and its music?
Who writes the words and who composes the music?
Phil X: Ninette and myself
write the lyrics and the music. Sometimes Ninette will
have an idea and we'll both finish it or I have something
that is way off and it takes Ninette to bring it into
Powder land. I think she is one of the most musical
people i have ever met because she has an amazing way
with chords, melody and syncopation not to mention her
clever lyrical abilities.
Now a silly question to Phil:
how do u keep your hair so right on your head? Dont
tell me that u need kryptonite to make them return at
their normal position!
Phil X: (laugh)... That's
funny. Actually, one time i went swimming and the spikes
stayed up. It takes me about an hour and a ton of heat
sensitive hairspray to initially do the job but then
it's good for a few days.
Which are Powders next
future plans?
Phil X: World conquest!!!
We plan on spreading the incredible word of Powder with
the new record, which does have previously unreleased
material on it, and touring all of Europe, Japan and
China before we hit the U.S. really hard.
My compliments for your cover
of Led Zeppelin "What Is And What Should Never
Be"! Why did u choose to cover a song of the 70s?
Maybe u wanted to show that there could be evolution
and space for new technologies without forgetting the
glories of the past
Phil X: Thanks. You are
exactly correct. We all love the original version but
once we performed it live in Los Angeles with Ninette's
voice, modern loops and huge guitars, the response was
phenomenal so we thought we had to record it and share
it with everyone.
Speaking about new technologies:
u worked for the programming of your songs with John
Vitale (Garbage, Republica) and with Scott Humphrey
(White Zombie). How did u meet these two great artists
and how much does Sonic Machine owe to their
cooperation?
Phil X: I did some work
with Frank Gryner before he starting mixing with Scott
Humphrey so when Scott was looking for a guitar player
to record on all the in-house projects, Frank suggested
me. We all hit it off great. I think I owe it to learning
so many cover songs when i began playing guitar. It
truly developed my ear where i could just hear something
once or twice and mimick it right away and Scott loved
that because it saves a truckload of time when you need
to track 5 or 6 guitars for a single song. I think one
time on the Billboard charts here in the U.S., I was
on a Rob Zombie track, a Tommy Lee track and an Andrew
W.K. all at the same time and Scott was the reason for
that. Scott and Frank also agreed to mix "Up Here"
on "Sonic Machine" for us and totally bumped
it up. John Vitale was invited to a Powder show and
freaked out. We immediately started working together
on "Seat of My Pants", "Losing You",
"Need a Little Help" and "What is...".
His ideas were invaluable and he really invoked and
captured magical performances from the whole band. We
were hoping to do more songs with him but everybody's
schedule got really crazy and our deadline came closer
and closer. We're looking forward to working with him
again.
What is the craziest thing ever
done in your life?
Ninette: Well... Everytime
i get on stage it feels like the craziest thing i am
about to do!!!
Allan Hearn: Scooba dive
with Sharks!!!
Phil X: Run naked and screaming
through a hotel corridor.
